I find myself sitting here at Panera, finishing up a spinach and artichoke quiche, laptop open, TheDanHealy website open, wondering where to start. It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to fully update this site with my latest adventures. So I think the best is to just start writing and see where it goes.
So, what am I up to?
I’ve resigned from Johns Hopkins University to re-join my previous employer, Clever Devices. JHU is an excellent place to work, but the “enterprise IT position” wasn’t for me. I need a fast-paced, high stress type of job. I left Clever Devices at the beginning of 2015 because I was burnt out from the excessive travel, partially that of which I agreed to. However, this go-round will be different. I set the expectations for travel right up front, and the company wanted be back – they value me, and I’m sure you know how much that can mean to an employee.
Aviation has taken over my life. Brain Satola, I love you and resent you for this! He introduced me to the idea that I could be a pilot early in 2016, and over the past year, it’s all I think about! Still working on my private pilot’s license (PPL), doing a self-study with Sporty’s Learn To Fly course to complete the FAA Knowledge Exam first before I start the expensive air-time. I’ve become a regular member of East Coast Private Pilots, primarily a Facebook group of more than 1,300 members. I’ve even taken the initiative to get their website going, see here. The closest airport to me is Clearview Airpark in Westminster, MD, and they have a flying club, the Clearview Flying Club, with a certified flight instructor as a member. I plan to use this CFI for my training when the time comes.
In preparation for my flight training, I’ve began building a flight simulator in my home. For now it’s pretty simple, but has the basic necessities: A high-power PC (already owned), 46″ LCD TV (already owned), yoke, rudder pedals, Bose noise cancelling aviator headset (already owned), a Flight Sounds USB interface for my pilot’s headset.
You can follow all my aviation adventures over on http://wwww.skylife.io (soon to be setup).
I’m also still attending the University of Marylard online for two master’s degrees: Masters of Information Technology with specialization in Systems Engineering, and a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA). I’m about 50% done. Still trucking along 🙂
I BOUGHT A CAMPER! Ha, at first that sounds not as exciting as I typed it in all CAPS, but I’m really excited. It’s a 1987 Jayco 23ft Travel Trailer, in excellent condition. Everything in this camper works! I bought it primarily to use for overnight stays at out of town races and events. Already used it a few times. Presently, I’ve started a project to paint the interior and modernize it for 2017. I’ll be blogging at that project here on TheDanHealy.
And last but certainly not least, I’ve become very interested in hiking, specifically the Appalachian Trail. I do a lot of different athletics, and hiking has peaked my interest. Primarily, for the same reason why I challenged myself to become a triathlete, I want to see if I can do it. And maybe to lose some weight too, haha. I’ll be carefully planning a decade-long section hike of the AT, starting in spring of 2018. In general, I plan to hike for one week at a time, twice a year, for ten years. This will cover every foot of the AT, all 2,190 miles. I’ll be blogging about all of this over at http://www.hikingwithdan.com (soon to be setup as well).
